How to Fix a Slow Computer: 25 Proven Fixes (2026 Guide)
How to Fix a Slow Computer: The Quick Answer
In a hurry? Here is how to fix a slow
computer in 8 simple steps:
1.
Restart your PC. It clears the RAM and
stops stuck background processes.
2.
Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
See if CPU, memory or disk stays above 80%.
3.
Close heavy apps and extra browser tabs.
A busy browser alone can use several GB of RAM.
4.
Turn off startup programs. Go to
Settings > Apps > Startup and switch off what you do not need.
5.
Free up disk space. Use Storage Sense or
Disk Cleanup to delete temporary files.
6.
Scan for malware and viruses with Windows
Security.
7.
Install Windows updates and driver updates.
8.
Upgrade to an SSD or add more RAM if the
computer is still running slow.
If you want to understand why your PC is
slow and fix it properly, keep reading. I have written this guide on how to fix
a slow computer the same way we explain it to customers at the counter. Simple
words. Real steps. No unnecessary tools to buy. You will find 25 fixes from
easy to advanced, separate tips for Windows 11 and Windows 10, advice for
Indian heat and dust, a short Mac section and an honest answer on when a new PC
actually makes sense.
Why Is My Computer So Slow? 10 Common Causes
Think of your computer like a small
kitchen. The CPU is the cook. The RAM is the counter space. The storage drive
is the store room. If the counter is full or the store room is a mess, even a
good cook will be slow. That is exactly what happens inside a slow computer.
These are the 10 reasons we see most often:
|
Cause |
What you notice |
Best fix |
|
Too many startup programs |
PC takes 2 to 3 minutes to become usable
after you switch it on |
Disable startup apps |
|
Too many apps and browser tabs open |
Lag every time you switch windows |
Close tabs and restart your PC |
|
Low RAM (8 GB or less) |
Memory above 80% in Task Manager |
Close apps or add more RAM |
|
Old hard drive (HDD) |

Did it slow down suddenly or bit by bit?
This is the first question we ask every
customer. The answer tells us a lot.
If your computer became slow all of a
sudden, something new is usually behind it. Maybe Windows installed an update
last night. Maybe you installed a new app. Maybe malware got in. But if it got
slower bit by bit over months, it is usually clutter. Too many apps. A drive
that is almost full. Years of old files. Get this one answer right and the rest
of how to fix a slow computer becomes much easier.
How to Find Out What Is Slowing Down Your Computer
A doctor does not give medicine before
checking the patient. Do the same with your PC. Five minutes of checking can
save you an hour of trying random fixes. Once you know the real cause, how to
fix a slow computer stops being guesswork.
Step 1: Look inside Task Manager
Press Ctrl
+ Shift + Esc. If a tiny window opens, click More details. Now go to the Performance
tab. This is like a health report for your PC.
|
Part |
Normal |
Problem sign |
What to do |
|
CPU |
Under 50% when you are not doing much |
Stays above 80% |
Close heavy apps and disable startup
programs |
|
Memory (RAM) |
Under 70% |
Stays above 80% or touches 100% |
Close browser tabs or add more RAM |
|
Disk |
Short jumps only |
Stuck at 100% |
Free up disk space or upgrade to an SSD |
|
Network |
Low when idle |
High even with nothing open |
Pause syncing and check for malware |
Then open the Processes tab. Click the CPU,
Memory or Disk heading to sort the list. Whatever sits at the top is eating
the most. If you do not need it right now, right-click it and choose End task.
There are two small clues here that most
people miss. Click Disk 0 in the
Performance tab and it will tell you if your drive is an SSD or an HDD. Then
click Memory and look for Slots used. If it says 1 of 2, you have
an empty slot and can add RAM later.
Step 2: Open Resource Monitor when the disk is stuck
Type resmon
in the Start menu and open it. The Disk tab shows exactly which program is
reading and writing all the time. When a customer's disk shows 100% and Task
Manager gives no clear answer, this is where we look next.
Step 3: Check Reliability Monitor for sudden problems
Search for reliability and open View
reliability history. You get a simple timeline of crashes, failed updates
and new installs. If your PC became slow on Tuesday, check what changed on
Tuesday. Very few guides mention this tool, but it often solves the mystery in
one look.
Step 4: Know how much RAM and storage you have
•
Press Windows + R, type msinfo32
and press Enter. Find Installed Physical
Memory (RAM).
•
Open Settings > System > Storage to see the free space on each
drive.
Step 5: Rule out a hardware fault
Sometimes the PC is slow because a part is
failing. A dying hard drive is a common example. Most brands give you a free
test. Dell has SupportAssist and F12 boot diagnostics. HP has PC Hardware
Diagnostics. Lenovo has Lenovo Vantage. To test the RAM, search for Windows Memory Diagnostic. To check
drive health, a free tool like CrystalDiskInfo shows Good or Caution in plain
words.
Quick Fixes: Speed Up Your PC in 10 Minutes
Start here. These steps cost nothing and
take a few minutes each. Honestly, this is the part of how to fix a slow
computer that people skip the most, and it is often all they needed. Check your
PC after each one. If it feels fast again, you are done.
Fix 1: Restart your PC (and do not just shut it down)
When your computer runs for days, the RAM
slowly fills up with leftovers from apps. A restart clears all of it. Here is
something that surprises many of our customers. On Windows 10 and Windows 11,
clicking Shut down does not fully
reset the system. A feature called Fast Startup saves part of the old session. Restart gives you a truly fresh start.
So use Start > Power > Restart, and try to do it at least once a week.
Fix 2: Close extra browser tabs and extensions
On most home PCs, the browser is the
biggest RAM eater. Twenty open tabs feel normal until the whole PC starts to
crawl. Close what you are not using. Remove extensions you installed once and
forgot. Then turn on the memory saving option too (see Google's Chrome
performance guide). In Chrome you will find it under Settings > Performance. In Edge it is under Settings > System and performance. Unused tabs go to sleep and
your RAM is free for real work.
Fix 3: End heavy tasks in Task Manager
Open Task Manager and sort by Memory or CPU.
End the apps you do not need right now. One word of caution though. Do not end
anything you do not recognise, especially items listed under Windows processes.
Closing the wrong one can freeze your screen.
Fix 4: Change the power mode
Many laptops quietly run on battery saver.
That mode slows the PC on purpose to save charge. In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power &
battery > Power mode and pick Best
performance. In Windows 10, click the battery icon and slide it to the
right. For video calls or editing, keep the charger plugged in.
Fix 5: Pause OneDrive syncing
OneDrive and Google Drive keep copying
files in the background. Right after you log in, this can make everything feel
heavy. Click the little cloud icon near the clock. Go to Help & Settings > Pause syncing and choose 2, 8 or 24 hours.
If the PC suddenly feels lighter, you found your culprit. Later you can choose
to sync only the folders that matter.
Fix 6: Stop Windows from sharing updates with other PCs
This one is hidden, and many people do not
know it is even on. Windows can upload update files to other computers over the
internet. That uses your data and your disk. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Delivery
Optimization and turn off Allow
downloads from other PCs. It is completely safe, and it really helps on
limited data plans.
Fix 7: Use Efficiency mode for background apps
Windows 11 has a handy feature for apps you
must keep open, like chat apps. In Task Manager, right-click the app and choose
Efficiency mode. Windows gives it a
lower priority, so your main work gets more power.
Fix 8: Make sure it is not just your internet
We hear this a lot: "My computer is
slow, YouTube keeps buffering." Very often the PC is fine and the internet
is the problem. Run a speed test. Restart your Wi-Fi router. If it is more than
4 to 5 years old, a new WiFi
router can make a big difference. Sit closer to it or use a LAN cable. Here
is a simple test. If File Explorer and Word open quickly but websites are slow,
your computer is not the problem.
Deeper Fixes: Clean Up Your PC to Run Faster
Still slow? No problem. Now we go a little
deeper. These are the steps we follow ourselves when a PC comes in for
servicing, and they are the real heart of how to fix a slow computer for the
long term. Each one takes 10 to 40 minutes. All of them are safe if you follow
the steps. Most of them also match Microsoft's
official tips to improve PC performance.
Fix 9: Disable startup programs
If your PC takes ages to start, this is
almost always the reason. Every app that starts with Windows sits quietly in
the background and eats RAM. Go to Settings
> Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and click the Startup apps tab. Sort by Startup impact. Anything marked High
that you do not need the moment you switch on? Turn it off.
•
Usually safe to turn off: music apps,
game launchers, Zoom, personal Teams, Skype, Adobe updaters and printer helper
apps.
•
Keep these on: your antivirus, touchpad,
audio and graphics tools, and cloud backup if you rely on it.
One warning sign to watch for. If you turn
an app off and it keeps starting by itself, run a malware scan.
Fix 10: Uninstall programs you do not use
New laptops in India often arrive with
trial antivirus, games and other apps nobody asked for. Older PCs collect years
of software that was used once. Go to Settings
> Apps > Installed apps and sort by size or install date. Click the
three dots next to an app and choose Uninstall.
A simple rule we give customers: if you have not opened it in six months, you
will not miss it.
Fix 11: Free up disk space with Storage Sense
Storage Sense is like a cleaner that comes
on its own schedule. It deletes temporary files and old Recycle Bin items for
you. Go to Settings > System >
Storage and turn on Storage Sense.
Click it to set how often it runs. On the same page, open Cleanup recommendations. It shows big files, unused apps and
temporary files you can clear in one go.
Fix 12: Run Disk Cleanup for system files
Search for Disk Cleanup and choose the C drive. Click Clean up system files to find even more space, like old Windows update
files. Just be careful with Previous
Windows installation(s). If you delete it, you cannot go back to your older
Windows version.
So how much free space is enough? Keep at
least 15% of your C drive empty. Intel
advises SSD owners to keep even more free, around 25 to 30%. A drive that
is packed to the top makes every single app slow.
Fix 13: Scan for malware and viruses
Malware is not the most common cause of a
slow PC. But it is the most dangerous one, so never skip this check. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat
protection. Run a Quick scan
first. Then go to Scan options and
run a Full scan. If a threat keeps
coming back, choose Microsoft Defender
Offline scan. The PC restarts and cleans things up before Windows even
loads.
And please run only one antivirus. Two
antivirus programs fight with each other, and your PC pays the price.
Fix 14: Update Windows and drivers
Many slowdowns are bugs that an update
already fixed. Go to Settings >
Windows Update > Check for updates. Then open Advanced options > Optional updates, because driver updates
often hide there. Your laptop brand's app also helps. Dell SupportAssist, HP
Support Assistant and Lenovo Vantage can update drivers and BIOS safely.
Restart your PC after any big update.
Fix 15: Turn off visual effects
Animations and shadows look nice. But on a
PC with 8 GB of RAM or less, they cost real speed. Search for performance and open Adjust the appearance and performance of
Windows. Pick Adjust for best
performance and click Apply. Then tick Smooth
edges of screen fonts again so your text still looks sharp. On Windows 11,
also go to Settings > Accessibility
> Visual effects and switch off Transparency
effects and Animation effects.
Fix 16: Stop background apps
Some apps keep running even after you close
them. In Windows 11, go to Settings >
Apps > Installed apps. Click the three dots next to an app and choose Advanced options. Under Background apps permissions, select Never. You will see this option for
Microsoft Store apps. On Windows 10, go to Settings
> Privacy > Background apps.
Fix 17: Repair Windows files with SFC and DISM
Damaged system files make Windows slow and
unstable. In our experience, a power cut in the middle of an update is a common
reason. Search for cmd, right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator. Type these two
commands one at a time and press Enter after each:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Each one can take 10 to 20 minutes. Let
them finish, then restart your PC.
Fix 18: Check the drive for errors
In the same admin Command Prompt, type chkdsk C: /f /r and press Enter. Press Y to schedule it, then restart. Windows
will scan and repair the drive before it starts. On an old hard drive this can
take an hour or more. Go have a cup of tea and let it finish.
Fix 19: Optimize drives the right way
Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select your drive and click Optimize. Windows already knows what
kind of drive you have. It defragments a hard drive (HDD) and sends a TRIM
command to an SSD. Do not use third-party tools to defragment an SSD. It will
not make it faster, and it wears the drive out.
Fix 20: Undo a bad update or app with System Restore
Did the trouble start right after an
update, a new driver or a new app? Then roll it back. To remove a recent
update, go to Settings > Windows
Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. To go further back,
search for Create a restore point,
click System Restore and pick a date
before the problem began. Your personal files stay safe. Only apps installed
after that date are removed.
Bonus
check: virtual memory. The page file is a part of
your drive that Windows uses as extra memory when RAM runs out. Go to View advanced system settings >
Performance Settings > Advanced > Virtual memory > Change. Make
sure Automatically manage paging file
size for all drives is ticked. Do not turn it off to save space.
Windows 11 and Windows 10: Version-Specific Tips
The basic steps for how to fix a slow
computer are the same on both versions. A few settings just sit in different
places. And if you still use Windows 10, there is one date you really need to
know.
Extra tips for Windows 11
•
Power mode: Settings > System >
Power & battery > Power mode > Best performance.
•
Efficiency mode: Right-click heavy
background apps in Task Manager to calm them down.
•
Turn off Widgets: Settings >
Personalization > Taskbar > Widgets off. It saves a little RAM and stops
news from loading in the background.
•
Startup apps page: Settings > Apps
> Startup shows the impact of every app in one place.
•
Check hardware support: Windows 11
forced onto very old or unsupported hardware often runs slow. The free PC
Health Check app tells you if your PC meets the requirements.
Still on Windows 10? Read this
Microsoft stopped regular support for
Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. A lot of websites still tell you that free
security updates end in October 2026. That is out of date. Microsoft has
extended its consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, and it now runs
until 12 October 2027. If you
already enrolled, you do not need to do anything. Your coverage simply
continues. Source:
Microsoft
To enroll, go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and click Enroll now. There are three ways to get
it:
•
Free, if you back up your PC
settings with your Microsoft account.
•
By redeeming 1,000 Microsoft
Rewards points.
•
A one-time payment of USD 30 or
the local currency equivalent.
Your PC needs Windows 10 version 22H2.
Options can differ by region, so check what your own Windows Update page shows.
Now, the part that matters for speed. ESU
only gives security fixes. It does not make Windows 10 faster. So clean up your
PC with this guide, stay safe with ESU, and plan your move to Windows 11 before
October 2027. If PC Health Check says your PC is eligible, the upgrade from a
genuine Windows 10 licence is free.
ReadyBoost: a small push for very old PCs
We still see old Windows 10 desktops with a
hard drive and just 4 GB of RAM, especially in offices. For these, ReadyBoost
can help a little. Plug in a fast USB drive with at least 500 MB free.
Right-click it in File Explorer, open Properties
> ReadyBoost and select Use this
device. It will not work if Windows is on an SSD, because an SSD is already
faster than any pen drive.
Hardware Fixes: When Software Is Not Enough
Let us be honest. No setting can make an
old hard drive spin faster. No app can add RAM that is not there. For many
older machines, the real answer to how to fix a slow computer is a small
hardware upgrade. But start with the cheap fixes first. You may not need to
spend much at all.
Fix 21: Clean dust from vents and fans
When dust blocks the vents, hot air cannot
escape. The CPU gets too hot, so it slows itself down to stay safe. This is
called thermal throttling, and it is one of the most common problems we open
laptops for. Use a small air blower or compressed air on the vents and fan
every 3 to 6 months. Do it more often in dusty cities. Dell's
support guide also lists dust and overheating as common causes of a slow
PC. If your laptop is still under warranty, please do not open it yourself.
Take it to an authorised service centre.
Fix 22: Stop overheating
•
Use your laptop on a hard, flat
table. A bed, pillow or blanket blocks the air vents.
•
Use a cooling pad for long work
sessions or gaming.
•
For laptops older than 3 years,
ask a technician to replace the thermal paste. Old paste dries out and stops
pulling heat away from the CPU.
•
Watch for these signs: the fan
is loud all the time, the keyboard feels hot and the PC slows down suddenly
after 20 to 30 minutes of use.
Fix 23: Upgrade to an SSD
If your PC still has a hard drive, this is
the upgrade we recommend first, every time. A hard drive has spinning parts. An
SSD has none. Customers often come back after this upgrade and say the PC feels
brand new. HP's
own numbers show the gap clearly:
|
Metric |
Hard drive (HDD) |
SSD (SATA or NVMe) |
|
Boot time |
60 to 120 seconds |
10 to 25 seconds |
|
App launch |
Clear delay on large apps |
Almost instant |
|
File transfer speed |
80 to 160 MB/s |
500+ MB/s (SATA) to 3,500+ MB/s (NVMe) |
|
Moving parts |
Yes |
None |
|
Noise |
Spinning and clicking |
Silent |
Before you buy, check what your PC
supports. Older laptops usually take a 2.5-inch SATA SSD. Newer ones have an
M.2 slot, which may be SATA or NVMe. Your laptop model page or manual will tell
you. You can also check our range of hard
drives, SSDs and storage. Most SSD brands give a free tool to copy (clone)
Windows from the old drive to the new one, so you do not lose your files.
Fix 24: Add more RAM
If Task Manager often shows memory above
80%, your PC is simply running out of room. HP now says 16 GB is the
recommended minimum in 2026 for smooth everyday use. With 8 GB and a dozen browser
tabs, most PCs start to struggle.
|
How you use your PC |
Recommended RAM |
|
Basic use: browsing, email, Office,
online classes |
16 GB (8 GB works but feels slow) |
|
Heavy multitasking, many tabs, video
calls |
32 GB |
|
Video editing, design, AI tools |
32 GB or more |
Check Slots
used in Task Manager first. Match the RAM type (DDR4 or DDR5) and speed to
the stick you already have. Many thin laptops have RAM soldered to the board.
That RAM cannot be upgraded at all. In that case, a new laptop
with 16 GB may be the better long-term choice.
A 2026 buying warning: RAM and SSD prices are high
If an upgrade feels costlier than last
year, you are not imagining it. Memory prices jumped sharply in 2026. AI data
centres are buying huge amounts of memory, so less is left for home PCs. One
market report found that a 512 GB PCIe Gen 4 SSD cost 54% more in the
second quarter of 2026 than in the first. Analysts expect tight supply to last
into 2027 or even 2028. India imports most of these parts, so local prices feel
it too.
So what should you do? Compare prices
before you buy. Buy from authorised sellers and keep the GST invoice for
warranty. And upgrade in the right order:
|
Your PC situation |
Upgrade first |
|
Has a hard drive (HDD) |
SSD. It gives the most speed per rupee. |
|
Has an SSD but memory stays above 80% |
More RAM |
|
Has SSD and enough RAM but CPU stays at
100% |
The CPU is too old. Consider a new
desktop or PC. |
Slow Laptop Tips for Indian Users: Heat, Dust and Power
Most guides on how to fix a slow computer
are written for cool, clean offices abroad. Life here is different. We deal
with 40°C summers, dusty roads and power cuts at the worst possible time. After
years of repairing PCs in Kalaburagi, these are the things we wish every
customer knew.
•
Respect the summer heat. When the room
itself is hot, a laptop has no way to cool down. It slows down much faster
under load. Work in the coolest room you have. Keep the laptop away from sunny
windows. Avoid gaming while it charges in a hot room.
•
Clean dust more often. If you live near
a busy road or a construction site, dust builds up fast. Clean the vents every
3 months instead of 6.
•
Protect your PC from power cuts. A
sudden power cut during a Windows update can damage system files. The PC may
become slow or get stuck at boot. Use a UPS
or inverter with battery for a desktop, and a voltage stabiliser if your
area has frequent fluctuations. After a bad shutdown, run the SFC and DISM
commands from Fix 17.
•
Keep the laptop off the bed. We know it
is comfortable, especially in hostels. But a bed blocks the vents and the
laptop overheats within minutes.
•
Remove the trial antivirus. Many new
laptops sold in India come with a trial security suite. Once it expires, it
keeps running and showing pop-ups. If you use Windows Security, just uninstall
the trial.
•
Stay away from cracked software. Pirated
Windows, Office and games are one of the most common sources of hidden malware
we find. That malware often runs crypto miners that keep your CPU at 100% all
day.
•
Buy parts carefully. Fake SSDs and RAM
do get sold on some online marketplaces. Buy from authorised sellers. After
installing, check the drive with the brand's own tool.
•
Pick the right repair shop. While the PC
is under warranty, use the brand's authorised service centre. For older PCs, a
trusted local shop is fine. In Kalaburagi (Gulbarga), Revanagiri Computers offers
computer service and laptop repair with local technicians. Wherever you go,
back up your data first and sign out of your accounts before you hand over the
PC.
•
Test your mobile hotspot. If you work on
a phone hotspot, slow websites may be a network issue and not a slow PC. Try
another network before you change any settings.
How to Fix a Slow Computer on a Mac
Using a Mac? The rules for how to fix a
slow computer on a Mac are close to the Windows ones. Macs slow down for the
same reasons. Only the tool names change.
1.
Restart your Mac. Apple menu > Restart.
It clears the memory, just like on Windows.
2.
Open Activity Monitor. Press Command +
Space and type Activity Monitor (Apple's
Activity Monitor guide). Sort by CPU or Memory. At the bottom you will see
a Memory Pressure graph. Green means
all is well. Yellow or red means you should close some apps, or the Mac needs
more memory than it has.
3.
Remove login items. Go to System Settings > General > Login
Items & Extensions and remove apps you do not need at startup.
4.
Free up storage. Go to System Settings > General > Storage
and follow the suggestions.
5.
Update macOS. Go to System Settings > General > Software Update.
6.
Give it a few hours after a big update.
After a major macOS update, Spotlight re-indexes all your files. The Mac can
feel slow for a few hours. That is normal, and it settles down by itself.
7.
Run Apple Diagnostics. On an Apple
silicon Mac, hold the power button until startup options appear, then press
Command + D. On an Intel Mac, hold D while it starts.
One thing to remember while buying: RAM on
Apple silicon Macs cannot be upgraded later. Choose enough memory at the start.
Common Mistakes and Myths About a Slow PC
You have probably seen some of these tips
forwarded on WhatsApp. A few of them actually make a slow PC slower. Knowing
what not to do is half of how to fix a slow computer safely.
|
What people believe |
What actually happens |
|
RAM booster or PC cleaner apps make your
PC fast |
Windows already manages RAM well. Many of
these apps run all the time, show ads and some even carry malware. |
|
Registry cleaners speed up Windows |
You will not feel any real speed gain.
They can delete the wrong entries and break your apps. |
|
Two antivirus programs give double safety |
They fight with each other and slow the

When to Reset Windows or Replace Your Computer
Sometimes the honest answer to how to fix a
slow computer is to start fresh. After years of use, Windows piles up leftover
files, old drivers and broken settings. A reset clears all of that in one go.
Fix 25: Reset this PC
First, back up your files to OneDrive,
Google Drive or an external drive. Please do not skip this. Then:
•
Windows 11: Settings > System >
Recovery > Reset PC.
•
Windows 10: Settings > Update &
Security > Recovery > Get started.
Choose Keep
my files. Windows reinstalls itself and removes all apps, but your
documents stay. Afterwards, install only the apps you really use. Most PCs feel
almost new after this.
Upgrade or replace? A simple rule
This is the question customers ask us most
often. Here is how we usually answer it:

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fix slow computer performance?
The easiest way to learn how to fix a slow
computer is to follow a fixed order. Restart your PC first. Then open Task
Manager and see whether CPU, RAM or disk is above 80%. Turn off startup
programs, free up disk space and run a malware scan. Still slow? Upgrade to an
SSD or add more RAM.
How do I clean up my PC to run faster?
Turn on Storage Sense in Settings >
System > Storage. Run Disk Cleanup and choose Clean up system files.
Uninstall programs you have not touched in six months. Clear your browser cache
and remove extensions you do not use. Finally, switch off startup apps you do
not need.
What is the most common reason for a slow computer?
On most home PCs, it is too many startup
programs and too many apps or tabs open together. Both fill up the RAM. On
older PCs, the usual reason is a slow hard drive (HDD), and an SSD upgrade
fixes it. Sorting out these first is the core of how to fix a slow computer.
How do I find out what is slowing down my computer?
Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task
Manager. On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory or Disk. The app at the top
is using the most. If the slowdown started on a particular day, open
Reliability Monitor to see what changed.
Why is my computer slow all of a sudden?
A sudden slowdown usually comes from
something new. It could be a recent Windows update, a new app, a driver
problem, malware or a drive that just filled up. If the timing matches, use
System Restore or uninstall the latest update.
Will adding more RAM make my computer faster?
Yes, but only if your RAM is actually full.
If Task Manager often shows memory above 80%, more RAM will help a lot. If
memory use is low, extra RAM will not change much. In that case, an SSD usually
gives a bigger boost.
Is an SSD upgrade still worth it in 2026?
Yes. Prices are higher this year, but for
any PC with a hard drive, an SSD is still the best speed upgrade you can buy.
Boot time can drop from over a minute to under 25 seconds.
Does a factory reset make a computer faster?
Usually, yes. A reset removes years of
clutter, old apps and broken settings. Use Reset this PC with the Keep my files
option, and back up your data first.
How often should I restart my computer?
At least once a week. If you use heavy apps
all day, restart every few days. Use Restart, not Shut down, for a full
refresh.
Can I fix a slow computer without spending money?
In most cases, yes. Every software step in
this guide on how to fix a slow computer is free and uses tools already inside
Windows. You only need to spend money if your PC has a hard drive, too little
RAM or very old parts.

Final Words
A slow computer can test anyone's patience.
But in most cases it is not a dead computer. It just needs some care. Now you
know how to fix a slow computer step by step. Start by finding the real cause
in Task Manager. Then try the free fixes first, like restarting your PC,
disabling startup programs, freeing up disk space and scanning for malware. You
will be surprised how often that is enough.
If your computer is still running slow
after all that, look at the hardware. An SSD is the biggest upgrade for any PC
with a hard drive. More RAM helps when memory stays full. Keep your laptop cool
and dust-free, which matters a lot in our weather. And if you are still on
Windows 10, enroll in ESU and plan your move to Windows 11 before 12 October
2027.
The best habit is simple care. Restart once
a week, keep 15% of your drive free and install updates on time. Do that, and
you will rarely need to search for how to fix a slow computer again.
